Need advice needed from fellow animal lovers.
Broke up with my boyfriend of 5 years about 4 months ago. We have 2 little cats that were officially mine (I had bought them and we agreed I was their main caretaker). I have temporarily left them in the UK whilst I find my feet here, which my ex has been good about (even though he wants to keep them), but it is getting close to crunch time for me to make a final decision.
I dont want to leave them behind but I feel guilt and anxiety for two reasons.
1) For putting them through a 15 hour journey where there can be risks to, even though small.
2) In their UK home they are free to roam outdoors whereas in my new place, there are coyotes so they aren't going to have the same outdoor life. I have a reasonable sized outdoor patio with a nice tree, which I would put specialised cat fencing up in to ensure nothing can get in or out. So, they would have outdoor life/ bird watching but a much smaller territory than they are used to. My house is spacious so they would have plenty of room to roam indoors too.
My ex travels a lot for work so if they remained with him they would have the bonus of outdoor life, but they would have different cat sitters/ whatever friends he can rope into staying with them for 2 week to 1 month periods fairly frequently.
Tldr; Am I selfish for putting my cats through this and changing their (outdoor) quality of life? There is a chance that in 3-4 years I would move back to the UK. Please help me rationalise. I am very emotional when it comes to animals and so need advice!
