Hi everyone,
I’ve just moved out of the family home I shared with my parents into a new house with my partner.
I have 2 dogs (male chihuahua aged 4 and female chihuahua aged 9) and my parents have one dog (female greyhound aged 5).
I have just moved about 40 minutes away into a new home with my boyfriend.
I left my dogs with my parents while we moved and unpacked but now I’m ready to bring over my dogs. I am just really really worried about how they will settle into a new home and how much they will miss my parents who absolutely dote on them! (They call them their grandchildren!).
I’m looking for advice on how to best handle the transition for them. My plan is to keep taking them back to visit my parents regularly and let them have stop overs there, as I know my parents and dogs will miss each other loads.
Should I bring the dogs to the new house and let them stay over for a night then take them back to my parents again, then bring them back to the new house and slowly let them get used to the new home? Or do you think that’d be confusing for them? Would they be better to come to the new house and stay for like a week or so, before going back to visit my parents?
I have a lot of anxiety about moving out of my parents home as they relied on me a lot for many things, I’m torn between trying to set up my ‘new’ life and worrying like crazy about how my parents are coping!
To complicate matters, my parents greyhound is absolute ultimate best friends with my male chihuahua, they’ve grown up together and are very close, so I’m broken hearted to split them up! I want them to have lots of visits and stop overs together so they don’t miss each other.
Please help me make this experience as easy and positive for them all as possible!
