should i give away my kitten?

I am a college student and I got a kitten back in October who was 2 months old at the time, he's now 4 months and a couple of weeks. He's a great kitten, pretty social and well behaved most of the time. He is a bit destructive and disgusting (tracks litter EVERYWHERE and hurls it with abandon from the litter box) and scratches up furniture despite having SEVEN scratching posts.

I am in a bit of a situation. Firstly, the vet costs so far have been almost $400. This does not even include getting him fixed or microchipped because the shelter did that for free. Plus I've been going to low cost clinics. Secondly, my roommate has a 4 year old cat that lives in our apartment. She swore he was great with other cats and they'd get along, and encouraged me to get this specific kitten (came to the shelter with me and helped me pick him out). Well, the introduction went sour and her cat is terrified of my kitten. So she won't let my kitten into the common area and forced me to keep him in my room because she believed the apartment to be her cat's territory. SO i let the kitten live with my boyfriend during the semester, which was actually really nice as they bonded great and i didn't have to do things like scoop litter and could visit him all the time. i have one semester of school left where he'll live with my boyfriend.

I'm home for winter break now and my parents HATE HATE animals in the house. It's been 2 weeks at home and they make me keep the kitten and all his stuff (food, litter box) in my room. My mom says next year when I'm moved out and visit home I can't bring the kitten. He's not the messiest cat but I am a clean freak/very hygienic and i'm getting sick of disgusting litter in my BED and the smell of cat shit and wet food in my room. So at my mom's commands I'm dropping him at a friend's for the next few weeks until break is over. I hope this won't traumatize him. He also wakes me up at 6 AM every day which has been horrible for my sleep and I feel like I'm going to fail my finals because I'm not getting sufficient sleep.

Next year i have a job in NYC and am moving there. I'll have to find a pet friendly apartment and am concerned about living with him in a small space. Also concerned about the costs. the $400 on ve t bills alone has been quite overwhelming .

I love him and want to keep him but I just think I jumped the gun a bit. My friend who he's staying with has said she would love to adopt him. Advice please!!!!
