Hi! lurker here and i have a question about dog skin tags and possibly removal. If this is not the right place to post and possibly deemed harmful I will delete my post. I tried to keep this short without omitting details, thank you for reading.
I will preface this by saying I had recently gone to the vet for a checkup on my 4yo shepherd mix. They examined the skin tag and concluded it is harmless. now the issue I have is my pup is constantly scratching at it, it isn't uncomfortable but rather that she has some anxiety issues with constant licking and nibbling. She does not have hotspots but had them in the past, she has not had any flareups since, just her usual licking and scratching. She also has heart guard and flea tick prevention, she's just a little weird. I'm really just worried she may make the skin tag worse or possibly scratch it until it bleeds and I don't want her to be uncomfortable if its there.
I am curious of at home options, currently with covid and losing my job I do not have the funds to pay for vet removal. The nearest date for removal/surgery is 4 months out due to covid. Really I'm just thinking about this and if anyone else has done this at home, my priority is comfort for my girl but right now she doesn't seem happy with it and I don't want her to wait any longer.
I have heard of some using a disinfected string every now and then to help harden it to fall off, if done safely it seems reasonable. I have also heard of using small amounts of retinoic acid on the skin tag, I had read this scientific study which seems to say it is safe if not orally ingested but I am EXTREMELY hesitant to try this. (I have used it myself in the past so thats the only reason I bring it up) https://academic.oup.com/endo/article/147/9/4438/2528350
Thank you all so much!
