My 6 y.o. indoor cat likes to dart out the front door when given the opportunity. She runs fast and tries to escape once she gets outside. We live on a busy urban road so this a major problem. We only have door into the house and no way to keep her away from it other than keeping her locked in a room.
I briefly had her as an indoor/outdoor cat when we lived out in the country & she'd regularly disappear for 48 hours at a time and go far from the house and into dangerous situations. She is not street wise. She will not come back when called, for regular meal times, or for treats or toys.
Usually, if people are in/out of the house fairly quickly and are semi-mindful of it, she doesn't get out or really make much of an attempt. However, two of my housemates are wheelchair users and it naturally takes them longer to get in/out of the house, longer to close the door, and makes it pretty impossible for them to grab her as she runs past them.
She doesn't care about getting sprayed by water, she only semi-avoids motion-sensor deterrent sprays placed by the front door, and treats only sometimes distract her.
Any suggestions as to how to deal with this? She's a lovely cat but strong-willed and almost too smart for her own good.
