Sorry this is so long I have a tldr at the bottom! So earlier today I took my dog out for her walk at around 7pm and found a cat sitting outside a house a couple feet away from mine (townhouse) that doesn’t have anyone living in it currently. The cat was skiddish at first and didn’t want to get near me/hissed but I rushed back inside and got some hot dog (the only thing I could think of lol) and put it in a bowl near her and walked away and sat next to my house to see if she’d eat it. She sniffed at it but then came up to me meowing and rubbed against me. She didn’t want to come inside when I opened the door so I opened my basement window which is floor level and let her come inside slowly and then shut it. She was upset for a little and meowed but still let me pet her ect. She meows like crazy! I know she is obviously a cat who’s had an owner and am planning to take her to the vet tomorrow to see if she has a microchip and am going to go around neighbors houses asking if anyone lost a cat. I’m just worried that she’s meowing because she’s in pain. She meows as she’s fighting sleep and when she wakes from sleep. I don’t know if it’s for attention as she has many moments she’s quiet. It’s snowed where I’m at and it’s freezing outside, she was walking so slowly to the point where I thought she was an older cat when I first saw her. Any chance the cold did damage to her? She’s I think a Norwegian forest, so I can’t tell from her shape bc of her hair how skinny she is but I can feel all her ribs and hip bones ect. She has matts too so I don’t know if it’s from neglect or she’s just been out there for a long time :( I fed her boiled chicken and am gonna get some cat food tmrw as I only own dog food. She’s a sweetheart so if she doesn’t have an owner and is ok with my dog I was thinking of keeping her! Any advice?? This is my first time potentially owning a cat and while I do love them I don’t know exactly what to do to make them comfortable as I’m used to dogs and I’m scared I’m doing something wrong.
Oh also lol I happen to have cat newspaper pellet litter because I own pet rats (their cage is critter nation so I’m pretty sure she can’t get into it either if anyone was worried, if anyone has experience w that pls let me know if I should keep them separated anyways!) and so I set some out for her hoping she might know how to use it and she did! if I ultimately can’t keep her though and she doesn’t have an owner I plan to give her to a trusted local shelter I know will care for her properly :)
Tldr: cat that I found outside skinny in the winter cold cries as she fights sleep and awakes sleep, is that normal for more vocal cats? Very obviously had an owner before so going to take her to the vet/look around neighborhood for potential owners. If not debating on keeping her! Any advice to make her more comfortable?
