Sorry this is long, I’m so sad for my cat and just need to get it out.
A few months ago we (me, DH, and two kids) moved into a house and ended up adopting the cat the previous owners left behind. Once the cat realized we were the new meal ticket and meant her no harm, she warmed up to us pretty fast. I’d never owned a cat before but she’s really sweet and we’ve all grown quite attached. We call her Xena, warrior kitty. She is used to being an outdoor cat but we’ve been letting her inside as often as she wants. We (fortunately) have taken her to the vet for shots and to verify that she was spayed.
We hadn’t seen any dogs loose in the neighborhood...until today. This morning Xena wanted to go outside. Probably about an hour later we saw two big dogs running around outside in our yard. They belong a few houses down and are usually fenced up but they must have gotten loose somehow. DH and I worried about Xena but didn’t see her around. And she was gone all day. I went outside a few times and shook a bag of treats while calling her. Even though she’s sometimes gone a long time I was getting pretty worried since it was cold outside (usually on a cold day she prefers to nap all day inside on her cozy bed). She finally showed up after dinner and we were relieved. But as soon as she was inside we knew she’d had a bad day - she was terrified by every little noise, acted like she expected to be attacked. We soon found wounds on her head, several small puncture marks like something bit her.
I feel so bad for her and scared to let her outside again. But I know she’s spent a few years of her life outside and won’t tolerate being indoors full time. I’m worried that she won’t be as sweet and trusting now that she’s been hurt. Is there anything we can do to take care of her as she heals? Tonight we’ve been giving her treats, pets, and space when she wants it. Ugh I’m just really worried about this poor kitty.
