So I’ve had my senior chihuahua for 8 years now. He’s currently 14 and not finding interest in anything!
Here’s a breakdown of all that I’ve tried:
-
When I first got him, he had a turtle toy that he loved and played with constantly. Well, somewhere along the lines turtley got lost and I tried to sub in new toys but he took no interest in any of the toys. So now, any time I try to introduce new toys, he doesn’t want anything to do with them. He literally won’t touch them.
-
Dog Park: He goes only to pee on everything. He could care less about the dogs there but just wants to mark. I still take him because it’s good for him to get out.
-
Doggy Daycare: NO INTEREST whatsoever. Doesn’t want to play and just walks around or sits in a corner. Even my boyfriends dog, he won’t interact with him. He’ll just go lay on one of the dog beds.
-
Walks: He likes short walks but if I try to take him on a trail, he’ll get about 10 minutes in and wants me to carry him. (I’ll chalk this up to him being a senior and his arthritis build up in one of his legs).
-
Kong Toy: Tonight I bought him a tiny Kong ball and was SO excited because I thought this will be great mental stimulation for him. I even bought him the peanut butter and inserts for it! He literally was interested for maybe 5 minutes before he left it alone and just went to bed.
I’m at a loss and don’t know what to do anymore. The vet says he’s in overall good health aside from a slight arthritis build up in his leg. But all he does is eat and sleep! He doesn’t play with me, toys, other dogs. It’s honestly making me sad because I feel like he doesn’t have a good quality of life at this point. I feel so defeated.
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
-A sad dog momma
