Hey people, I’m going to try and keep this short and to the relevant bits.
Partner and I have one four year old cat who used to be a mother earlier in her life and had a good deal of energy so we recently adopted a 12-week old kitten so she wouldn’t be alone when we went to work and whatnot. I’ll say off the bat that the introduction process kind of got derailed when the new kitten totally slipped through the bars of the baby gate we were using to separate them and I’ve been trying to walk it back to get them introduced more slowly.
Our adult cat doesn‘t hate the new kitten but they haven’t really learned how to play together yet and I can tell it stresses both of them out; they just aren’t on the same wavelength. Since they both have energy I thought the best advice to take that I read over and over was to bring them together for shared playtime. Well this is great, only the kitten has like ADD or something. She could be having a blast with her toy but the second another toy comes into the mix, like a laser pointer, the thing she’s playing with is shit and she needs to have the new one, totally cutting off the adult from having any fun. I can’t help but feel this feeds into the stress and lack of shared language of play but I don’t know how to fix it. Nothing I do keeps this kitten locked into one toy long enough for my adult to play with anything.
Please and thanks for any help.
