Non-Recognition Aggression Cat Help

My poor baby boy kitten (Kitten 1) needed emergency surgery this week. He has been bonded with my other kitten (Kitten 2) since birth. Upon coming home from the vet yesterday, Kitten 2 didn't seem to recognize Kitten 1 and has been hissing whenever she gets close. We've separated them (Kitten 1 is in a large crate in a different room while he recovers), but sometimes Kitten 2 will even hiss behind the closed door. I have NEVER seen Kitten 2 get aggressive before--she is as sweet as anything and will let anyone hold her, and has never given me a hard time with baths or administering medicine. Has anyone else experienced this, and what did you do to resolve it?

I know Kitten 1 probably still smells like the vet (he even smells funky to me but we cannot bathe him yet), and I've tried rubbing them both with the same towel to get Kitten 2 familiarized with the smell. I live in an apartment and am worried about reintroducing them or if they'll ever go back to being BFFs.
