Hi all! I am currently living in an apartment with my best friend from college and I have a 12 year old female cat that I adopted from a shelter almost 3 years ago. Prior to adopting her, she had only ever lived with her old owners and her sibling, a male cat that I adopted at the same time but unfortunately I had to put him down due to illness a little over a month ago.
So while dealing with the loss of her brother and being the only cat in the house for the first time in her life, my boyfriend had planned to adopt a puppy, which he did just a couple of weeks after putting my male cat down. My boyfriend doesn’t live with me, but we are planning to move in together later this year, so it’s important that we get the puppy and the cat acquainted so that it’s not a total disaster when we are all living under the same roof.
His puppy is now an 11 week old English lab, and is about 15-16 lbs, but is just going to keep getting bigger and bigger and she’s growing very quickly, so I want to make sure they get used to each other before she is so big that her shear size is too intimidating to my cat.
In addition to all of this, my roommate decided to get a kitten, so add the stress of losing her brother and getting a puppy to now having to be introduced to a new kitten, as well. I feel like it’s a lot of change all at once and I feel really bad for my cat and just want to make sure I’m able to do these introductions properly.
The puppy is much more time-sensitive, since she’s just going to get bigger and bigger very quickly. The kitten, we currently have locked in my roommate’s room and have let them sniff each other through the door. Does anyone have any advice for introducing my cat to either or both of the other animals? I have never had to do this before and I’ve read a lot of tips online about introducing cats to dogs and cats to other cats, but the thing I can’t find much on is if the cat and dog don’t live together but you’re trying to introduce them. It’s not like we can just leave one them in a room and the other to to freely roam around the apartment or the house while we are at work since we don’t live together, and my roommate doesn’t like us having the puppy here too much yet because she’s not fully potty trained yet and we have all carpet, so I’m not sure what exactly to do from here.
