Hey guys! I have an 18-year-old cat who has started opening her mouth then she purrs. She will inhale through her mouth, and exhale through her nose. Wetting her mouth between breaths. Her breathing doesn't sound weirder than normal, but she seems to feel some discomfort. She'll move away from us when she starts purring, lay down, and often get up again after a short while to change positions again. When she stops purring, she breathes as normal, and she can lay down in the same position for hours. She's not really trying to engage with us, and she's normally a needy girl, demanding cuddles for hours and hours, so this is unusual for her.
We took her to the vet yesterday to do a physical exam and bloodwork. Her tests all came out perfect, and the vet couldn't hear any liquids in her lungs or feel anything stuck in her throat. So really, she found nothing. She gave us anti-inflammatory meds and painkillers that we're giving her for a week, just in case she has an inflammation somewhere. But other than that, I didn't really get an answer to why this is happening.
She still seems fairly happy, and she drinks and eats as normal. The only thing is that she seems a bit tired/fatigued and not as interested to play as she usually is.
I know asthma is a common thing in cats, but as her breathing otherwise is normal, even when she's running around and playing for long periods of time, I find it weird to imagine it only kicking in when she purrs? If she's not better after a week on meds we'll take her to the vet again. But as the vet seemed unsure, I'm just wondering if any of you have experienced anything like this or have any suggestions to what it may be.
So far, she's only been on the medication we got for a day, so I don't expect seeing results yet.
Here's a picture of her for good measure. :) Thanks in advance!
