I've been looking into getting a praying mantis as a pet. As for variety/species, I'm leaning toward whatever is easiest to take care of and is most affordable.
- Food - if I only need to feed a mantis a cricket or whatever every couple days or so, where do you get this food? No one sells 1 cricket. Do I now need to raise crickets (or whichever bugs I choose)? Do I find my own? I heard that can introduce disease. What do you do for food?
- Where can I actually get a mantis? No chain pet store around me in Los Angeles seems to have them. Amazon has eggs for sale, but I only want 1 mantis, not dozens. I'd love to hear different means of obtaining mantises. The cheaper the better. I can't afford to pay $40 plus shipping for a bug right now.
- How necessary are springtails for keeping the substrate (e.g. Eco Earth) clean?
Any advice, thoughts, and suggestions would be appreciated! Keep in mind I'm very new to this!
