Stray cat/previous owner situation (need general advice)

Here is my situation

There was a stray cat that came into our backyard mid october 2020 that looked malnourished and unkept. We didn't know what to do since it could have had an owner. A day or two goes by and it came back and this time I felt bad so we placed a bowl of water and food in our yard. I believe for a week straight after this she continues to come. I felt bad, maybe she was homeless. We gained her trust and she came into our home.

She would stay here for about 5-6 hours per day where we would provide a bed, clean water and fresh food for her daily. She was kept warm during the cold weather. She plays with us, is a very polite and well mannered cat. With covid shutting places down and long wait times, we got her a rabies shot, flea treatment and a core vaccine (the FVRCP vaccine for cats) on december 3. She has been a part of my family from mid-october until december 31.

On new years, a young lady and her brother came to our doorstep and basically said it was their cat that they bought off kijiji. Said they lost it. What I had gathered is that the poor cat has been basically homeless for nearly a year. We have been giving it a home for 3 months of that time, thank god it was during winter season. I was shown photos of it as a baby that resembled her especially a white spot at the end of her tail. They live about 5 minutes from us.

The young lady of the group wasn't rude or hostile just wasn't willing to listen to me. I offered her my number to her 5-6 times as I didn't know much about anything and figured it would buy me time to think things through. It was met with a "but i want my cat though". She explained that they hadn't gaven it a microchip, nor a vaccine of any kind. She said this cat's dad was also missing from them. I thought what the hell is wrong with these people. With all this being said, I tried my best holding my ground but I wasn't informed of cetains things about owning cats and so i gave in and let her take the cat. I let her emotions get the best of me. If you're reading this, you probably think I'm pretty stupid for doing so and I feel the same. She lives only a few minutes away and I desperately want her back now that I am more knowledgeable on things. I will be reaching out to a vet but I would love to hear your guys opinions thoughts and suggestions. I know I made a pretty big mistake.

Thank you :)

Cliff notes:

-stray cat wonders to our backyard mid october 2020

-found out she has no current owner, has been homeless nearly a year

-we gave it a home, had water, food and a bed provided for everyday

-Spends a minimum of 4-5 hours a day with us before she goes outside to play I guess

-previous owner comes to our door on new years

-bought it off the internet, with no record of vaccines, nor a microchip. lost it nearly a year ago

-i'm certain she isn't lying, but i want her back.
