What do I do with my cat banging on my bedroom door every morning?

I have a kitten that will be turning 7 months tomorrow. I used to have his litter box in my master bathroom. I put a blanket in there and would close the door at night to my bedroom so he would have the room to himself. I for the longest time didn’t trust having him downstairs and the whole house to himself. I don’t let him IN my bedroom because I can’t fall asleep with him in there. He jumps around and runs around and jumps up and down my bed.

But then I eventually took the litter box down to the basement and cut a whole in the door to the basement. Now every night he just sits outside my door and claw and bang at it for a bit. He then quiets down until the morning and then starts whining and meowing and banging on it again. Even though he has the whole rest of the house to himself.

I usually feeds him around 7ish PM and 7ish AM. Since I wake up around 7ish everyday. This helps to keep him on a regular schedule. I also do give him just a little bit of food right before I go to bed. Typically about half of as much as he would get per meal. Just to keep him from starving at night.

My friends have to told me to just fill up a bowl and then let him eat whenever. But I’m concerned for his weight again and having food out all the time will cause him to become obese.
