Advice needed on separating two dogs who have bonded ...

Hello

I moved to California a couple of years ago and adopted my amazing boy Riker. He is about 3.5 years old, jack russell mix, neutered male. After about a year and a half I had to move back home with my parents in NY due to some health related issues. I obviously brought Riker with me. My parents have a 5 year old mutt named Nala, spayed female. They have become a pack, and have taught each other a lot. This is very clear to all of us. Before Riker met Nala , any dog that’s approach him he’d roll over and be completely submissive. Nala gave him a great deal of confidence. I have not seen him get on the ground due to submission to bigger dogs ever since.

They’ve been together for over a year and a half now and I moved back to California to actually begin working in the vet med field and enrolled into school starting in Fall. When I say I cried for months before I left NY I mean it. I could not stop thinking about my decision to either bring Riker back with us, or to leave him with Nala and my parents who love and care for him simply because of the guilt I feel of separating them.

Riker is definitely prone to anxiety pretty easily. He hasn’t really ever had issues w separation anxiety, but I’m just not sure how big of a change it’s be for him to move again, without Nala, and have us working out of the home (whereas Riker was used to my mom working from home and being able to spend time w them and give them attention).

I guess I am curious how much this can actually effect a dog? I know they form very special bonds, I just can’t seem to decide what’s best for him? Being with me (who he is very strongly bonded with) or stay with Nala who he is also very bonded w/ in ways I as a human cannot be.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
