I've brought my cat(7) to move with me after moving out for 2 and a half years. I've posted on /r/catadvice before about other issues but on his 5th day he's done way better and is now comfortable in the room and has secured 2-3 napping spots. As said in the title I want to move him to the liter box instead of outside which is where he used to go before back at my moms place. I'm hitting a wall with the bathroom. up until yesterday I kept moving the liter box around the room to move it closer to where he kept going. I'm in the basecamp phase still of the whole cat in a new house with a resident cat so I saw the box should be in the room for now. Yesterday he kept trying to poop on stuff and I kept trying to show him the liter box but he got upset and went to pee under my roommate's bed. He still tries to bury the poop and pee with my blankets. It sounds odd but I'm on the floor because he kept pooping and peeing where I slept so he did it on my and my roommates bed. He's been doing it on the floor since I've slept. Yesterday I switched his liter to something not clay based just in case the texture wasn't suited to his needs. I swapped to corn based liter, and moved the liter box. I noticed he would go to the door first so I moved the liter box to the bathroom. Just now he kept wanting to go to the room but I kept making him go out to the hallway where the bathroom was the only door open. He went in and peed next to the toilet, the opposite side of the bathroom from the new placement of the liter box. He then ran and pooped under my roommates bed after. That may have been my fault I moved a bit in the hallway and I think I spooked him out of the bathroom I see this as a sign that he's getting close but still needs to get by. I don't know how to make him comfortable going in his box. he sniffed it a little bit but still wanted to pee next to the toilet. I don't know if I should close my door when he needs to use the bathroom and force him in the hallway since this time he naturally went to the bathroom next the toilet. But everything I read says forcing him will make him have bad habits and I think him noticing I don't like him pooping on beds and blankets is making him use the bathroom under the bed. My roommate tells me put him in the yard but hes not leash trained yet and isn't ready to be since he's barely comfortable with my room after 4 days. I don't want to throw him in the backyard since he might get somewhere I can't get to or go in either neighbor's backyard where they have dogs. Should I just move the liter box next to the toilet instead, how do I make him aware it's an option instead of the floors and beds.
