Two weeks ago my SO and I adopted a puppy. He’s about 5-6 months old. He’s high energy and has separation anxiety. We’re working on the anxiety and have the time and space to work out the puppy energy. He’s a quick learner and we’re very happy with how much he’s learned in two weeks.
My cat is 5. I’ve had her for 4 years, since me and my SO got together. We moved from a apartment to a house about 4 months ago. My cat settled in very well and pretty quick. After two weeks she explored with no issue and after three months she was completely back to her normal self.
Since I’ve had her, she’s hissed twice. Once when I first got her and once when she accident got her tail stuck in the garbage can. Since we’ve had the puppy, she hisses at him almost non stop.
We live in a ranch style house. Puppy has full reign of upstairs and cat is downstairs. There is a hallway that goes from the upstairs to the basement where there is a dog gate with a cat door. Her litter box and water fountain are in this hallway. She’s been using both with no problem. Her food and an additional water dish are in the basement. Prior to the puppy, she loved exploring the basement and had fun hanging out so we figured having it become her domain would be fine. She’s been eating and playing when she is downstairs.
When she comes upstairs, she comes out of the gate sometimes. Sometimes she sits on the other side of the gate and watches what’s going on. She comes out for about 15 min and then goes back to the basement.
Puppy gets so excited when she comes out. He’s very curious about her. No chasing. Sometimes he playful barks which upsets her. If he comes near her, she hisses at him. If she approaches him, she walks slow but doesn’t hiss. If she’s sitting and he walks past, she doesn’t flinch.
She seems to be adjusting but I’m so worried because she’s not herself when she sees the dog. She’s never been around a dog.
What are my signs that there’s progress being made?
