Cat vs dog

I live in a small 3 bedroom house with my boyfriend. We have been going back and forth about getting an animal, however, we haven't really come to a conclusion of a dog or a cat. I lean more toward a dog, and he leans more towards a cat. I've taken care of two dogs in my life, one of the times I was the sole owner of the dog. The reason why I am a bit hesitant about a cat is because of the litter box. I've taken care of cats before, but they were outside cats that pretty much just came and went as they pleased.

We don't have that much space anywhere in the house that wouldn't be considered awkward for the litter box. We don't have a garage, only a covered parking space. I was wondering what people think about this sort of situation, especially if they have experience with taking care of both animals. I feel like people are either cat or dog people, no in-between. My boyfriend's concern with the dog is doggy proofing the house, since puppies like to chew anything and everything. I would also like to point out that I would be the one mostly taking care of the animal. Anyway, any advice would be much appreciated!
