fecal sample!

Hi! I have a question maybe y'all can help with.

Is a fecal sample considered a normal part of a dog's yearly checkup? Backstory: I found a pup (a former stray) and took him home a little over a year ago. He recently has had stomach issues (diarrhea, a bit of vomiting, and apparent stomach discomfort, over a period of a month). He was due for his yearly checkup and shots anyway, so when I brought him to vet I explained his symptoms. As far as I know, they didn't do any tests on him for this; they only responded that he might have an allergy (and offered to sell me a different brand of food). And well he might! Not ruling that out. But I was a little surprised (and frustrated) at the time, that they didn't run any tests.
This week when talking about it with a friend, they told me they always drop their dog's poop off for a yearly fecal exam. I have not been asked for any poop sample, ever, and as someone relatively new to having a pet in my life, I didn't know I needed to ask for such an exam. And, my pup is still clearly dealing with something. Am I overreacting, or should my vet have had more initiative here? Just trying to sort out how to proceed. Thanks.
