If my stray cat had an owner, would the owner be able to claim him?

( Throwaway btw)So my sister met a seemingly stray cat on the road right before we were leaving for a trip, and my mom, decided we could adopt him. She was oddly friendly for a stray, and she had a collar (without a name or number or anything). When we got home, it was pretty clear she had been someone’s. She was litter trained, she knew wasn’t afraid of our relatively big dog, and just other little things that made it clear that she used to be someone’s indoor cat. Owe we’re going on our road trip a day later, and took her to a vet (at the state we were road tripping in, not the state we live in) like 2 days later. The vet checked her for a microchip, and there wasn’t one. We had no way to contact the owner, so we decided to keep her. Since we didn’t get her from a shelter, we don’t have any official papers that say she is ours, we aren’t getting her microchipped, all we have is a collar with her name and my mothers phone number on it. We are leaving to go back to our home state tomarrow, If her old owners were able to prove she had once been there cat, would we have to give her back? Since she is in indoor cat, the only way I would really see that happening is if we happened to befriend her old owners, and they came to our apartment. We found her like 2 miles away, and we just recently moved there, so we don’t really know any one. Still, I’m worried. Oh, also, sorry for any spelling problems or if I was bad at explaining, I’m 13 and I am on my IPad
