Is getting pet rats an endless cycle until an inevitable neglectful end?

So I’m looking for a low maintenance pet, as my landlord doesn’t allow cats or dogs. I’ve been told cage animals are okay. I love all the pros about rats, their sociable nature, their intelligence. But I’ve read, just like with guinea pigs it’s cruel to have just one. I’ve found a decent sized cage that’s good for 4 at max, I’ve looked at the guidelines and I can only find a cage that’s not too wide, it’s just tall enough for 4 or I can get one for 2, but the one for 4 seems perfect so I think I could go for 3 rats. But my issue is that eventually 2 will die so i’ll have to introduce another one or two and then the oldest rat will die then one of the others and so on. Is it just inevitable when I’m done with the yearly deaths that I’ll have to keep just the one and let it die lonely most of it’s life (cause I have to work and sleep). Is the one of the things no one tells you?
