When I finally move somewhere where I can have pets (have the space and the money), I very much want a pet of my very own.
However, i'm trying to decide what pet will fit me best when circumstances allow.
I plan to always have a trustworthy roommate or S/O, and for one of us to always be home (otherwise have a pet sitter). I am okay with a pet that requires a lot of attention or is noisy/messy, as long as the bond and interaction I can have with my pet is real and close.
I love rats, but they live for only 2/3 years on average. I want a pet I can share my life with, that will live almost as long as I will/about as long. Cats can live a long time, but the reward of having one depends on training and temperment. That goes for most pets, though
Another consideration I had was medium to large size birds - small birds like finches are typical harder to bond with and dont live as long. I would be entirely willing to put in the training time a parrot species requires and reserve an entire room or two to their care and keeping. I would be okay with taking them outdoors on a harness to fly when indoor flight doesnt cut it (I would not be clipping my bird's flight feathers). Conures (green cheeked) or a type of cockatoo appeal to me, even if they may be noisy.
I wouldnt get my furry/feathered/scaly companion until I 100% had the resources for training and care, and was certain I was making the right choice of pet.
I dont want and cant have children, so thats something to consider. This would be a maybe 2 person household, so I do worry about the idea of my pet becoming territorial over my roommate or girlfriend and I, or shy around other humans.
