I rescued a dog nearly a month ago, he has some very obvious behaviour issues which I know is most likely from his past. He is a mastiff mix. Here’s the problem:
I tried teaching him sit, stay, paw, lay down etc. so far all he has retained is sit. He literally cannot grasp the concept of lay down, even if I get his nose near the ground and guide him to lay; he will just lift his butt up in the air because he doesn’t want to lay down. He also just doesn’t understand what stay is, even if i only take one step backwards he jumps up and will literally step on my feet and lean against me with all of his weight... He also can’t contain his excitement, ever. I will go to feed him and ask him to sit and he gets way too excited, if i take the food away and try to get him to calm down he thinks he’s in trouble and he will piss everywhere and it literally does not stop. My entire house will be covered in piss and all I had done was take the food/treat out of his sight. Just today I had taken him for a walk and right after we came inside we played like we always do, and then right in front of me he squatted on my bed and proceeded to release a full bladder even though he just peed like 300 times outside.... I feel like no matter what I do or how much time I spend trying to train him properly, nothing gives. I just don’t know what to do at this point and it’s causing a strain on the relationship between the dog and I. If anyone has any guidance at all, I would be more than grateful as I really love this dog I’m just at the point where I feel like it’s hopeless..
