I’m really at my wits end and would truly appreciate any advice or information someone has to offer.
We’ve had our 5 year old cat since he was just a few months old (before he was neutered) and we have really had no issues with him until recently. He’s always been a really sweet cat that gives lots of snuggles (maybe the occasional nip/scratch after too many pets) but there have been a number of incidents in the past month or so that have me really concerned.
It started a month or so ago when our cat just randomly came up to my husband and bit him on the arm. We were both just sitting on the couch and looked at each other like wtf was that about. He normally is very very affectionate with my husband in particular and we thought it was strange that of all the people to choose from he went after him. Similar events happened again to my husband and myself and we decided to make an appointment with the vet. Around this time my husband had noticed (as crazy as this sounds) that the attacks were happening after one of us sneezes.
So we take him to the vet, she says he looks great (maybe he needs a teeth cleaning sometime soon) but overall he looks good. I talk to her about him attacking us (and mention the sneezing part) and she doesn’t give us much of a suggestion other than medicating him which I’m not super thrilled about that idea. If it were just my husband and I dealing with this I wouldn’t be too worried, we’d just deal with this occasional attacks (and try not to sneeze around him) but what has me really concerned is we have 1.5 year old kid.
Now just recently there have been a couple incidents where he’s attacked me when I’m home alone with our kiddo and when i try to remove myself and the baby from the situation he follows me which makes it difficult to leave our living room since we have a baby gate I need to open. Today he actually kind of had me corned. I can go into more specific details on what happened if that would be helpful it’s just kind of a long story.
Our kid is interested in the cat but when we say don’t touch the kitty she actually listens and won’t touch him, but will continue to point and giggle at him. Our kid isn’t exactly a “new edition” to the household as she’s over a year old she’s also been mobile for awhile and has always made noise. The attack that happened today didn’t occur after a sneeze but did occur after quite a bit of crying from the baby.
At this point I’m actually kind of afraid of the cat and I don’t know what to do. I’m really afraid our kid is going to sneeze and the cat is going to attack her. I’m not sure if this is related to loud noises, our kid, or if he’s just unhappy.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Could it be noise related? Could he be under stimulated? Need more playtime? He’s an indoor cat who is interested in going outside, should we let him? I love our little guy and don’t want to get rid of him by any means but this behavior is quite frankly concerning me for my child’s safety.
