[rant] "You're going to give your cat back, right?"

Just have to rant. I have a cat and a kitten. I am dealing with an immensely stressful situation where the newly adopted kitten is very sick - probably was sick long before I got her. Vets are not sure what is wrong with her but it is something serious and likely fatal. I am holding out hope for a miracle, but I am also being realistic.

Anyway. I was on the phone with my father and this conversation went down:

Me: says something about letting her go (euthanasia) if she deteriorates

Father: "But if she miraculously recovers, you still need to let her go."

Me: ".................huh?"

Father: "I mean back to the rescue."

Me: ".........Why would I do that?"

Father: "You already have another cat."

Me: "..........................And?"

Father: "Well ever since the new kitten came home, you've been insanely stressed. Your life would be much simpler if you only had one cat."

Me: "Yeah, because the kitten was sick. With something that's probably fatal. This is not a normal level of stress I would expect if she were healthy."

Father: [clearly not listening] "Well, even the rescue won't take her, you can just drop her off at a random shelter. With 2 cats, you'd have to scoop more litter boxes-"

Okay, at this point I kind of blew up.

Me: "WHY WOULD I DO THAT? The whole point of getting two cats was to have TWO CATS. Not to adopt TWO CATS and give ONE away. That is so stupid. I can't believe you said that."

Yeah, it was extremely immature and not fitting my age (I'm almost 30, loooool) but WHY??? WHY??? And considering the circumstances - if this kitten were to live, she would have made some kind of miracle recovery. After all the heartbreak and sleepless nights I've already poured into her care, yeah, sure I'm going to rehome her if she gets better.

[for anyone who digs into my post history, yes, I have already contacted the rescue about rehoming her to a home with no other pets because currently we don't know what she has or if it is contagious. Hence I have to keep her separated from my other cat, which is causing both of them stress too. But if I end up being the one to see her through her illness, then obviously I'm keeping her...]
