Hi all! My sister and her husband found a very sweet cat that they named Asami back around Thanksgiving. They were trying to find her owner for about a month before she managed to get out of their house while in heat. She came back a couple of weeks later and as of this past Monday their vet confirmed she is between 35-40 days along in her pregnancy. My sister already had another cat and a dog prior to this, on top of a very rambunctious 2 year old. Their house is not very spacious and it is very loud and kind of chaotic (2 year olds tend to be) so she is worried about when it comes time for little miss kitty to give birth.
My husband and I foster litters of kittens and we have fostered newborns before so she really wants us to take her cat in for the remainder of the pregnancy and until the kittens are weaned. We are happy to do this and in fact are looking forward to it, having just lost our own special needs kitten last week. My sister and I are planning to meet half way so that I can bring her cat back to our house. We have a guest bedroom we use for fostering so it is all set up with lots of cozy places for her to sleep, a big window that lets sun in all afternoon, and all the vet care she could need. The drive from the halfway-ish point will be about 12 hours. Asami is a very laid back little cat but I'm wondering if any one has any advice regarding travel with a pregnant cat. This would be the first time we have had a pregnant cat in our care so I am not as familiar with how to handle something like this. We are planning on having a large kennel set up for her with a litter box, comfy bed, and plenty of food. I can plan on making lots of stops if that might help make the drive less stressful for her. Could that cause any issues for her pregnancy? Is there anything that I can do to make it less stressful for her?
On the once we get home front -
Would it be smart to put the mattress in our guest bedroom directly on the floor to prevent her from giving birth underneath the bed?
What would you recommend we get for her to give birth in? (Amazon links would be appreciated!)
I already have kitten formula on hand to supplement her diet and we have made a vet appointment for next week to get an xray and determine how many kittens she is expecting. We are also going to get her tested for FIV/FeLV. She will be completely separated from the rest of our pets for the remainder of her pregnancy to minimize stress and make sure she doesn't get hurt (our cats do not always take well to adult animals)
Notes - My sister lives in a very small town and the shelter does not have room for Asami (plus we really don't want her to have her babies in a shelter). My sister would keep her at her house but there honestly isn't a good safe place in her house where she could have her kittens that wouldn't be stressful/dangerous. They also having a herding dog that barely tolerates their existing cat so they would be very worried about him possibly hurting the kittens. Their vet said that based on the ultrasound he thinks she will have more than 3 or 4 kittens.
