What kind of a pet would you recommend to me or am I doomed to a pet-less life?

I have had pets and animals in my life as long as I can remember - dogs, bunnies, horses. When I moved out from my childhood home to live alone, it was a weird feeling to not have a pet. A couple of years ago I decided to get a dwarf hamster - a pet suitable for a small studio apartment - and he has been a fun little companion. However, he's clearly nearing the end of his short hamster life. I have started to think about getting a new pet after he passes.

I live in a small apartment by myself (38 square metres - don't know what that would be in American measures), and I work from Monday to Friday, from about 8 AM to 2-3 PM, so the pet would have to endure 6-8 hours by himself daily. I liked having a hamster since he coped well with being alone that time, but on the other hand, he wasn't very social. (Well, I don't think he ever really liked me that much... I got him tamed, but he prefers running around the apartment to hanging out with me). I would love to have a pet who is social and enjoys cuddles, but can also cope alone for some hours. I live in the city.

A dog is not possible since my apartment is so small and he would have to hang out by himself & walking him 3-4 times a day (and a lot more often during puppy time) is a bit too binding to me. A hamster works for me otherwise but I would love to have a bit more company.

Can you come up with a pet that would suit my lifestyle & be a social companion, or should I just ditch thinking about getting a new pet until I have a big house in the countryside?

Edit: I have no allergies.
