Absent roommate has dumped their cat on us, and now he’s peeing outside his litter box

Hi all,

Looking for some advice on how to approach a situation that’s cropped up in my apartment. I live with a handful of people (a mix of people who knew each other before and people who came in separately) in a pretty beautiful apartment we’re lucky to have. There are two cats, one of which is very well behaved and cared for.

However, the owner of the other cat (we’ll call the cat Toby) entered into a relationship and they’re at their S/O’s place ALL THE TIME. The owner is here maybe two or three times a week, and they constantly ask us to feed their cat. A couple months ago the other cat owner noticed cat pee by the litter box, and realized Toby’s litter box wasn’t getting cleaned regularly. She worked something out with Toby’s owner at the time to split litter box cleaning duties to accommodate them being at their S/O’s place, but Toby’s owner hasn’t lived up to that and the other cat owner is basically the only one cleaning both litter boxes now.

It seemed like the peeing problem got better, but I was cleaning the floors and realized there was a corner of the apartment which absolutely REEKED of cat pee. Furthermore, Toby has taken to puking all over the place and it’s always on us to clean it up because his owner is never home. Also, I love cats and had them growing up, but this one is an odd duck. For instance, hopping up onto counters and tearing open bags of rice. We have informed the owner of the issues but they go unaddressed, and we’re not sure what do. I’m afraid we’re going to lose our security deposit if he keeps peeing where he shouldn’t (plus the smell is awful), and even though we’re keeping Toby’s litter box clean I think the behavior is linked to him missing his owner. Low key also worried there is a real risk of abandonment when the lease expires. Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed here? Thanks!

TLDR; An absent roommate’s cat is peeing on things/puking/tearing stuff up, she has not acted on previously agreed upon steps to address the behavior, and we’re sick of it and are afraid it will impact our security deposit. Need advice on what to do.
