Hello! First time posting here. Adopted my cat 10 days ago from the HRA in Washington, DC, and I’m concerned so far. Some details:
-
I am 23, grew up with cats, and thought I was thoroughly ready to adopt, care for, and love a cat
-
My apartment is about 1200 sq ft. Not a shoe box, but the little fella may not feel all that free
-
He is three years old and 8.8 pounds. I feed him a mixture of wet and dry food twice daily to total 200 calories
-
He always seems to be hungry! Even right after I feed him, he seems to want more. He’s started diving into my trash for empty wet food tins today
-
He is rather chatty, but I near constantly hear him “humming” — unsure if it’s chirping or moaning
-
He loves attention, which is rather surprising. The shelter and foster (who also had a dog) described him as very independent/ reserved, yet willing to show affection every now and then.
6a. I thought this would work perfectly with my 9-5 work schedule.
6b. Since adopting, he doesn’t have a sense of boundaries and is all up in my face constantly.
6c. I have tried giving him “exercises” with a feather string toy a few times daily to offer attention and give him an outlet for energy, but nothing has changed
I have a vet appointment next week, but I’m curious about opinions here too. I hope I don’t sound selfish, but he has been a big source of stress rather than joy for me so far.
How do I adjust? How does he adjust? At what point do I consider surrendering?
Thank you.
