So, long story short, my wife and I have a 7-month old kitty (Henry) who is boisterous and playful, and we figured needed a second cat to keep him company when we are out or don't feel like playing. So, we went to the shelter we got him from to find a cat of a similar age and adopted Gigi, a 10-month old ginger kitty.
We took the requisite time to help her settle in, and she is now used to us and to our house, but she really doesn't like Henry much at all. She is a lazy cat who just wants to find a warm place in the sun to curl up and nap for 5 hours. Henry however, whenever he sees her bounces around her energetically and gives her playful whacks with his paw to try and get her to play but she won't have a bar of it, she tenses up and hisses and eventually runs away, which he interprets as chasey and runs after her, pounces on her back etc. Gigi doesn't like it so we have to keep them separate.
I don't really know what to do because Gigi is a beautiful, affectionate young cat and we are quickly falling in love with her, but we can't let her out unless we put Henry away first which defeats the purpose of getting her as his playmate. I have heard that some cats just aren't suited for eachother no matter how hard you try, and I see that Gigi is probably better suited to a single-cat home, but if we have to take her back to the shelter it will break our hearts. What should we do? Is it possible that they will learn to co-exist after a few more weeks together?
