Blue Pearl Veterinary Services: A Cautionary Tale

Today I received an email from Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital located at 190 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn, NYC. They asked me to fill out a survey about my recent experience with them and list my reasons for my answers. This was my response: (Spoiler: my dog is dead)

  1. I brought my dog to your "facilities" twice in under a month.

2.These two visits totalled $10k.

  1. After the first visit, one that lasted less than 24 hours, my dog was in noticeably worse health. I paid $5k for your "veterinarians" to make my dog sicker.

  2. Your "facilities" consist of a vestibule where one of your masked people literally cracked open a door, tossed out a rope, shut the door and then instructed me through the closed door to put the noose around my sick and scared dog's neck as a leash and then go back outside and just wait with the other sobbing people whose animals were being held hostage. Some masked person took the rope and yanked my dog into your facility.

Knowing that my dog was sick, scared and that I couldn't be with her to calm her down was up there in top reasons I would rather euthanize my other dog rather than ever put her through the nightmare of "the Blue Pearl experience".

  1. After relinquishing her to the masked person who dragged her away, I was instructed via a voice on an intercom on the outside of the building to wait for someone to contact me. I asked if I should go home, if I should loiter around the outside of the building in the cold with the handful of other visibly upset, some crying, owners of pets who were in the same position. I was told I could go home. 30 mins later I was en route home and received a call from one of your billing people and told "Oh, you left? Well you should come back to pay money if you want anyone to even look at your dog."

Ok. So I turned around and came back. 5k dollars. Ok, no problem if it means your "professionals" will save my dog. See that's what leads to the next issue.

  1. One of your "professionals" contacted me a few hours later to tell me there was no diagnosis. I was given a list of issues that "could've" been the problem (all of which I could've figured out with a simple Google search). BUT, what you did feel was a good idea was a blood transfusion. Odd... Until I saw the itemized bill. Then I understood why Blue Pearl likes blood transfusions. Next day you contacted me to come pick her up. No idea who was a doctor, who was billing, who was a tech. Just voices over a phone or through an intercom instructing me to pay money, to leave, to come back, and that my dog was sick. That was honestly the diagnosis. She's sick. Thank you guys so fucking much for telling me! And you only charged $5k for that? Saints you are! Doing the work of Saint Francis of Assisi.

  2. I assumed you told me to pick her up because your "vets" or "techs" or whoever random people wander around your facility that is sealed off from the public had taken care of her "condition" - which was never told to me - interestingly you made me pay for a bunch of prescriptions (that I truly believe harmed her) which seemed strange since no one actually diagnosed her with anything. When I brought up that she was exhibiting symptoms of Cushing's disease I was told "Maybe, but there's probably other issues and we should treat those first."

Spoiler: it was just that -Cushing's disease. Plain and simple. But treating Cushings is just some pills. You wouldn't have been able to fill up pages of itemized billing with just that. What you put my dog through in order to hike up your billing was disgusting. But at least you got your $5k cash that first visit. I came as instructed to pick her up. As usual there where scared sobbing people milling around outside. I rang your intercom system and was met, as usual, with a "Yes?" Not a hint of anything other than "Wtf do you want, I'm busy looking at TikTok and you're annoying me." I said I was there to pick up my dog, as instructed. After an intercom exchange of back and forths that left me thinking I had to be on a hidden camera show because thos level of both incompetence and also plain rudeness could not possibly be real life, I was told "Ok. We'll find her. Go wait on the sidewalk till we call you back". I obeyed. After 20 minutes I saw my dog being pulled into the vestibule, noose and cone around her little neck. She cowered and stared at the ground as your "tech" unfastened her noose and yanked the cone off her head in a way that reminded me of the the kind of people who work in slaughterhouses. I rushed to the door to get to her but, as usual, the door was locked. I rang the intercom. "Yes?" came the annoyed voice. My dog is sitting alone in the vestibule! I'm trying to bring her home please open the door! There was an audible sigh and finally the door clicked and I was allowed to hold my dog. Someone yelled through the door to read the instructions on the bag of pills that had been tossed into the vestibule with her. 7. I took her home, meticulously followed the directions I was given and within 24 hr she was shitting blood - something that had never happened. Over the course of the next 15 days after her initial stay with Blue Pearl, her "condition"- again none of your people could tell me WHAT that condition was - worsened until I had to bring her in again. She lost 10 pounds, stopped eating and list full mobility. NONE of this happened until after she stayed at your facility the first time. That's what my first $5k bought for my dog.

  1. I carried her to the front of your nightmare building. I called when I was 3 minutes away to ask that someone be there to help me on arrival. No one was there except crying people whose animals were being held hostage by your sadistic staff. I struggled with my gasping dog in my arms to hit your ridiculous intercom button with my elbow. The voice answered as usual - Yes?

I was in tears and explained I had called 3 minutes ago and was assured someone would be there to intake my dog. The door buzzed and the voice said "Place her in the vestibule and then exit." I yelled back that she could not stand and I wasn't going to toss her on the floor and walk away. This conversation took place while my dog was literally gasping for air and wincing. The voice said Fine. Wait there.

THOSE MINUTES THAT I STOOD OUTSIDE WITH HER IN MY ARMS WERE THE LAST MINUTES I GOT TO BE WITH HER. A MAN IN A MASK OPENED THE DOOR AND TRIED TO PUT A ROPE AROUND HER NECK. I YELLED "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? DRAG HER BODY WITH THE NOOSE?

He seemed annoyed at the realization that he'd actually have to take my dog out of my arms. He went back inside, leaving me and my dog outside. Note: the front door and vestibule is made of glass so you can see the front desk. I watched the guy throw down the noose, walk over to the front desk, chitchat with some receptionist. I elbowed the intercom again and yelled "I need help!" The guy looked at me through the glass and sauntered over, opened the door, and grabbed my dog out of my arms. I tried to talk to him. He turned his back, walked back through the door, called over his shoulder "Someone will contact you," and the door slammed shut in my face as some man carried my dog away around a corner.

  1. I waited outside. The billing people called. I brought another $5k cash into the vestibule. I went home.

Next day, a rude doctor called me. He told me my dog was very sick. I said Yes, I'm aware. That was why I brought her to you people the first time. But you gave me no answers and now she's back.

His response was that if I'd need to pay upwards of $15k more in order to find out what was wrong. Otherwise, he informed me, he would do me the favour of killing her.

Honestly, I dont remember the rest of that day. I know my significant other who lives across the country had to call the facility for me to confirm whether or not Blue Pearl had killed my dog bc you all didnt even have the decency to call when it was done. But when it came to collecting money, you are truly efficient.

This email asking me to tell you about my experience two weeks after you charged me 10k cash to murder my dog is the first time anyone has contacted me since the doctor gave me the ultimatum of $15k more to keep your dog alive or we can kill her for you.

Those are the primary reasons I will tell anyone who will listen to stay the fuck away from Blue Pearl.

I will copy, paste and post this on social media, in chat rooms, live streams, forums and subreddits. I will tell this story until I die.
