Hi! I live with roommates and one of them has a cat, 9 years old and male (T). He is SUPER sweet and sociable and has lived with other animals his whole life.
A few days ago I brought home my new cat, 2 years old and female (M). I’ve been letting them meet each other in little increments and she likes to explore. However there’s a problem: T hisses at M whenever she tries to say hi. She seems more wary and cautious than outright scared of him, and she’ll run away but come back a moment later.
We called T’s mom (my roommate’s mom who’s had him since he was a kitten) to ask why he was behaving like that, and she said he had never lived with a female cat (or female animal in general) before.
What can I do? Is this fixable? He only hisses when she gets too close, he’s fine when they’re in the same room and doesn’t usually initiate contact. He hasn’t tried hitting or biting her yet but it’s only been a day. I’m so worried because I love her so much and want to come to a conclusion that doesn’t involve having to give either of them up.
