I've recently been having this issue with my cat where they'd eat only half of their food, try to bury it, then walk away. Normally, I'd just move the food around and they'd come back, but recently they would sniff it and either just stare at it (then me) or would scratch around their bowl (then either stare at me or walk away).
I haven't changed their food so since it's been getting warmer, I thought that maybe the dry food had gone stale, so I would mix the leftovers with some wet food to entice them. But they'd sniff it, take a few bites, then scratch around the bowl and walk away again. Sometimes, I'd even bring them back to their bowl and when they see it, they take just a few bites then leave it again.
It's the same brand and the same amount of food and they've done it to their wet food the last time too. I haven't really noticed any changes in behavior or weight either (unless I'm not noticing something). They're my first cat and I've had them for 8 months, so I'm not sure if this is actually normal for them and it's them becoming more comfortable, if there's something I should change about food (but I don't know what since they seem to do it to both dry and wet food), or it's a clear sign that something is wrong and I should take them in.
I've already panicked before and taken them in for what was apparently normal as they adjusted to a new home and I don't want to keep taking them to the vet when it's unnecessary because it gets them anxious and I don't want the vet to not take me seriously for doing multiple false alarms.
Any advice or tips would be helpful, thanks!
