Edit: he is 2 years old.
We adopted a cat almost 3 weeks ago now. He was doing well but suddenly became hissy. He used to come out to the cat tree at night but won't anymore. We don't know what happened but we got a feliway diffuser. It's helped him calm down a little.
Usually hes a very cuddly cat. But we have to sit by his hidey hole and he'll approach us but will eventually go back in. He loves pets and will hop onto and sleep in our laps if we sit next to his little house. He'll roll over on to his belly and do all kinds of cute things.
But then at night he hisses at a distance (we don't even approach him :( he'll just hiss at a distance). He has growled at my SO too for passing in front of his box at night. My SO has to wake up around 5:30 am and he'll run away as fast as he can and also hiss and growl. Today, it wasn't even his "I'm scared" hiss he was standing up, back curved and started making a MROW sound and wouldn't move out of the way. Then when we came back from work, he was cuddly again and approached us outside his box and head butt us??
Why are his behaviors at night and day so different? Can he learn to coexist with us? It would break my heart to have to rehome him but I'm just worried he'll bite or scratch one of us because of how scary he gets.
