Cat having a hard time adjusting to scheduled meals

We adopted a new cat exactly two weeks ago. She’s 2. We also have a 5 year old cat.

New Cat is currently in my bedroom while we slowly introduce the cats. New Cat was free fed at her foster home and we’re trying to get her on a meal schedule, because Old Cat is obsessed with food and would absolutely eat both of their food. So we want New Cat on a schedule before they’re together.

We’ve been trying for about a week. I’ll put the bowl down and she’ll eat anywhere between a couple of bites to half the portion, then she’ll ignore it. At her next meal she’ll act excited for food but do the same thing again.

Complicating factors: New Cat licks the food before eating it. She’ll lick it and then eventually eat some. We’ve tried giving her pate so there’s nothing to lick, but she only likes one kind of food and I don’t want to mess around with that until the meal issue is fixed. She was a little spoiled in her foster home.

Everything I’ve read about this says that the cat will figure it out within a few days. New Cat must be hungry since half the time she only eats a little. Why won’t she just keep eating?? I know I’m giving her the right amount per meal.

We tried dividing it up into three meals instead of two, but that seemed to make it worse. She only ate a bite or two.

I don’t know what to do. If we can’t get her on a meal schedule before it’s time to introduce them, we’ll just have to separate them for meal times. And with how slow New Cat is, that means she might be separated for a while until she finishes. I’m also willing to try a microchip feeder but I’m afraid she won’t figure it out.

Sorry this is so long! Any suggestions?
