Do cats' asthma always get progressive?

I have a <1 year old kitten who just got diagnosed with (for now) mild asthma. I was instructed by my vet to switch her litter to unscented and low-dust as well as to get an air purifier. I plan on doing both, but I went down a rabbit hole of information and now I'm terrified that my cat is only going to get worse from here on out and I'll have to pay hundreds of dollars for treatment and inhalers. I'm a college student who can barely afford to pay for that kind of stuff and I don't want to lose my kitten or see her in any sort of suffering. I would love some advice or anything of the sort from people who've had asthmatic cats or dealt with them. Thanks.
