Flying with my two pet cats. Tips?

I’m going to be flying to relocate across the country. Leaving my cats behind is not an option — they’re my everything. I made the decision to choose a four hour flight instead of a three day (26+ hour) drive. I think it’d be easier on my cats, however they’re AWFUL in cages and in cars. I can’t imagine what they’ll be like on a plane and in the airport.

The vet said he does not recommend tranquilizers for flights due to things such as elevation and oxygen intake. Thus, I must take these rambunctious two in cabin. I refuse to put them in cargo.

I bought a bunch of things like Feliway and various cat calming snacks. I’m going to take them on car rides after they have exposure to these to see how they react and if it does any good calming them.

Any tips you would give a person flying with cats? I know I should need a harness and a leash because I will have to take them out to scan their cage in security. Any information or even stories about your experiences would be helpful. I’m dreading this!
