The situation:
I have 2 cats, 5 and 6 years of age, boy and girl (fixed). Boy cat is with me since he was 3 days old, he is a foster fail (yay). Girl cat is with me since she was a kitten, she helped foster a bunch of tiny kittens and a couple traumatized adult cats and is now retired. Both happy, healthy cats
They have many, many toys that usually sit in a pile somewhere and there will be a handfull scattered on the floor. I like to change them up, put away a few, grab a few different ones from the pile, so they always have something interesting to play with. Somethimes they will fish something out of the pile themselves.
A few weeks ago I gathered almost all of the cat toys -it's a lot, think 2 large shoeboxes full- and put them together on a new (washed) little blanket on the couch. There was also another new (not washed yet) blanket next to it
Now my cats don't just pee on stuff, they are potty trained and always use the litterbox (2 cats, 2 boxes, each in a different location, they get cleaned often), but on very rare occasions boy cat will pee on something new that hasn't been in the wash yet. Like the new blanket this time
I picked up the washed one with all the toys on it, moved it to a chair, tossed the peed on one in the machine, cleaned the couch and thought it was all done. No more wetness, no more smell, cool, fixed it. Right?
Until just now, about 3 weeks later...
So I went through the pile to pick a few "new" toys and was instantly hit with that wall of urine. Apparently cat didn't just pee on the unwashed blanket, but also on the other one and the toys. Or it leaked through, I don't know. But long story short, all the toys reek of old cat piss and it's bad (cat people will know what I'm talking about)
Most of them can luckily be machine washed, but there's also a couple rods and some of those wicker like things that can't go in the machine. Now if it were fresh pee and still wet I would be ok with soaking them right away and cleaning them off by hand. But this is old pee, all dried up, maybe all soaked in even?
A few of those things are fairly new and some of them they like very very much, so if there's any chance I can clean them up I would like to. But how? (don't worry about the couch and chair, it's leather and already cleaned)
I do have a bottle of uri-go like stuff, but I'm a little worried that will soak right into the toys and might get them sick if not rinsed off properly. It's a very nasty chemical thing and I don't think I would be comfortable using that on the toys. They chew on all the parts of all the toys. Risking a tiny little bit getting left behind is not something I'm willing to do
I thought of maybe soaking them in a bucket of water with something. Vinegar? Baking soda? Something else? Rinse and repeat a few times, would that be sufficient? If yes, how long and how often to get everything out properly? I know the crystals in cat urine don't break up with any old cleaning agent. And having pee-toys scattered throughout the house is not exactly an option, ew, lol
Any advice?
