i've never owned a pet before but i want to adopt a senior dog who has spent his entire life in shelters. how difficult will this be?

i have been wanting a dog for a while and i think i've finally reached the point where i can responsibly own one. the thing is, i've never owned a dog, or any pet for that matter. i am interested in adopting a 14 year old dog. i came across him on one of websites of a rescue center and instantly felt such a rush of sadness for him - he has spent his entire life in shelters :( it breaks my heart. i know it'll be difficult to adapt, and i know i wont spent many years with him but i want him to enjoy the last years of his life in a real home. do you think this is a bad idea, given my lack of experience being a pet owner? is it even healthy for such an old dog to be placed in a new environment? any advice or information is appreciated.
