Hi there! I have two cats, sisters, that are 6 years old. Been together everyday of their life since the day they were born, and never aggressive with each other. Both HATE all other cats and dogs and do not get along with any other animals but love each other.
On Thursday (5 days ago) I took one of them - the more chill one - to the vet for a standard teeth cleaning. She was there for 8 hours, and went under for the op. Brought her home at 6pm and let her out thinking my other cat would be fine with her. I knew about non-recognition aggression but I figured mine would be ok. For some background, the other cat had a teeth cleaning 3 years ago and when reunited all was fine. I know now I really messed up this time.
This time, non-vet cat went up to vet cat and smelled her.. no problem, and then a few minutes later started hissing at her. We separated them, but non-vet cat would still hiss under the door or when she smelled vet cat. We kept them separated all night, and then in the morning non-vet cat saw vet cat when I opened the door and vet cat ran into the room. No hissing, so I let them be together, and then of course a few minutes later non-vet cat hissed. When I pet vet cat and then non-vet cat, she’d hiss at my hand that smelled like vet cat.
Over the weekend it’s been this way, non-vet cat would be seemingly ok, so we’d let them be semi introduced, and then out of nowhere she’d hiss at vet cat. Vet cat is very chill so she never hisses back and they haven’t gotten aggressive at all.
Now, since yesterday they are 100% separated at all times, but non-vet cat is still very jumpy, constantly looking and watching out for her sister and seeming very nervous, jumping at every sound. I feed them on both sides of the door and they’re both okay with that, no hissing or anything.. I just don’t know what else to do. Will non-vet cat ever be ok with her sister again? What else should I do? She no longer hisses if she smells vet cat on me, so that’s good I think?
Thanks in advance and sorry about the wall of text.
