Obligatory "should i get a dog - post" (Single, working fulltime, recommended by therapist)

Hello,

can't find anything in the rules against posting this but I guess this has been aksed 1000 times: Should I get a dog ?

I'm single and finished my degree a few months ago and now I have more time with flexible working hours as a lawyer (8 hours a day though). I don't have a garden because I live in the city. My personality is calm and I'm patient. I don't travel much (like once every 2 years). I have been diagnosed with depression a few years ago and my therapist recommended to me from the beginning that I should consider getting a dog or a cat.

I've googled a lot but most webistes are very discouraging and basically say if you don't have 500m2 garden and if you are not unemployed, then dont get a dog. IF I'm going to get a dog then its going to be the most calm and low energy race I can get due to me working 8 hours a day (like a besset hound). How about shelter dogs?

I know that a dog is a huge commitment but I hope to get more opinions from reddit. Thank you.
