Is it okay to adopt a cat knowing that I'll rehome it if it doesn't get along with my current kitten?

I have a 10-month old spayed domestic shorthair female kitten named Otter. She is my only pet currently.

I'd like to adopt a second cat to be her buddy but I'm concerned that they won't get along. As far as I know Otter has only lived with her mom and littermates before, never any other cats. Otter is my top priority and I'm thinking that if the two cats don't get along, I'll have to rehome the second one to keep her comfortable in her own home. Obviously I'm hoping they would be friends, but I'm not going to let Otter be miserable in her house.

Is this okay or should I really hold off on getting a second cat what with all the uncertainty?
