It's the luck of the draw I guess. When you sign up to have kids you hope for a healthy baby and accept the outcome, and I think you don't take into consideration any different when it comes to pets, they are my kids equivalent.
I don't have anyone to be able to really get down in the weeds and have a good rant about this. My friends aren't massive animal people and their issues by comparison (kids/divorce/etc) make mine not worth mentioning, so I'm writing this down mainly for emotional release, and to talk about it.
I have 4 pets. They are all "sick" and are draining me, mentally and financially. Of my 2 dogs, my oldest who is 9 years is a Lab who had ongoing skin issues for about 4.5 years where vets kept telling me he had flea dermatitis before I finally snapped and yelled at a vet promoting them to consider other possibilities.... turns out he has hypothyroidism and will be on expensive medication and vet prescribed food for the rest of his life. This also means he has to go to the vet every 6 months for checkups so he can continue to be prescribed his food and meds. THE REST OF HIS LIFE. My younger pup also has skin issues and had them the day I picked her up. Even though she's not even 7 months old she's been to the vet/dermatologist 10+ times while they figure her condition out. They think it's an allergy to protein which will be lifelong, and again, meds and vet prescribed food. She going again tomorrow for an injection to control the itch as the food doesn't seem to have offered any relief. This is an ongoing money-haemorrhaging nightmare. FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE.
My oldest cat was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cat cancer about 2 years ago. After spending just under $4k and learning what he had, I decided to leave nature to it. This decision sucked to make and I cried for so long thinking what if the chemo helped, how can I make it work!? Although he was given 4-12 weeks without chemo he's still going but recently he's been showing signs the end is near. His breathing sounds like someone with a blocked nose. He has a long medical history which I haven't gone into, but I took him back to the vet at the end of last year when the growth appeared to shrink and the vet said if he's happy then leave him, this cat has gained weight he doesn't have cancer. It's a curious case. I don't think he's got much longer.
My youngest cat is almost 2. She's easily my healthiest animal, but she's been to the vet twice this year for getting herself beaten up. I'm not sure what is happening but the first time a few months ago she come home limping with her face covered in blood and I rushed her to the after hours vet where they said she had teeth bite puncture wounds, missing teeth and soft tissue to her legs. Well, that happened again on Monday. Back to the after hours vet. I don't know what's going on, but locking her inside is out of the question. I have a feeling my older cat is beating her up.
When I was in the vet waiting room on Monday I started to feel that my pets aren't financially sustainable. I scrolled through my banking and went back to the start of this year, and I haven't had 1 single damn pay that I haven't had to pay vet bills. This pay for instance is 3 separate vet bills for 3 separate pets! I am doing this by myself and I was trying to get rid of my mortgage by taking advantage of the great low rates, but my pets are making me not have enough money to go pay-to-pay and I'm going to end up in debt.
4/4 of my pets are "sick" and it's hard work. It's been nice to write this down. I'll feel self-conscious about how much personal info I've got floating around the Internet and no doubt delete this, but it has been a release to get it out.
