Older dog can bark for hours when alone

Our 12 year old Shih Tzu has started to show signs of aging and we aren’t sure how best to help him. He gets a lot of attention but when we are all at work, or doing school from home and needing to stay in rooms, he barks literally for HOURS when he does not see someone around.

He has been to the vet and he simply is just getting older and likely experiencing separation anxiety or confusion as he cannot see or hear very well anymore and cannot see people around him at all times. I understand these long episodes of loud bark could indicate other issues but he is physically okay.

This is incredibly frustrating because he does not get tired of barking. I bet that if everyone is out of the house for hours at a time he never stops.

Is there ways to alleviate this problem? Anxiety medication is something we may use. But the only way to stop his barking is to walk up to him and show that we are in the house. We don’t know what to do anymore as he wakes us up early in the mornings (after he has been able to use the bathroom and eaten) and probably bothers neighbors too.
