Advice for someone attempting to adopt a dog ;

Hey guys, Ive finally approach into a time where I have the time and resources for a dog. Ive only sent out two applications, one of which I sent before thanksgiving to which I never got any kind of response..no "we will let you know or application received", nothin. The other I submitted yesterday and still no answer or notice of them having received it. Is this normal? I guess the only issues I could see them having is that I will have to leave them alone for 5-7 hours mon-thurs while Im at work. My sister however works from home and she will be available to let the pup inside/outside so they will rarely be completely alone. We have a really large yard and access to a garage if the dog is outside and I plan on getting a dog house. There is also a sheltered laundry room. How much time is too much to be outside in a mild climate with‏‏‎‏‏‎‏‏‎‏‏‎shelter and space? And I guess another issue is that I havent had a dog as an adult, only as a kid. BUT ive worked with dogs professionally, in kennels and Ive pet sat quite a bit for rover so Im really comfortable with pets and acting as a leader for them. So...what was your experience adopting? Im not after a puppy or anything, the two Ive submitted for were 3 and 5. Also Im in the LA/OC area. Im checking my email constantly to see if I get any kind of reply. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.
