Grieving / Dealing with dog's sudden diagnosis

Learned this morning that my family dog has an aggressive cancer and there's nothing that can be done she hasn't been eating much this week and we finally took her to the vet and received the news. She's a beautiful and sweet shih tzu. It was sudden and shocking to our entire family. Our beloved dog will be put down tomorrow because she's lost a lot of weight and won't eat anymore. We're spending our final night with her now. I spent a lot of the day crying its been hard and i need advice dealing with it. now although I will miss her dearly I actually feel slightly at peace and appreciative of the time I had with my dog. I was wondering if this is normal? Do you think my dog can sense how I'm feeling and knows that I love her?
