I have no idea if I am in the correct Reddit, but I assume us pet lovers can unite over this. I share a house with 2 other roommates. We all work full time. We all have pets. One of my roommates owns a very high energy (hyper, if you will) young dog. This roommate works full time, and then comes home and stays in her room all evening. I get it, long day at work. The problem is, her dog doesn’t stay out and around the house during the work day. She stays locked in a crate, in her closet, with the crate covered with a blanket. This is for 8, up to 12 hours a day. No food, no water, no radio or TV on, all dark and alone.
We don’t have a fenced in yard, unfortunately, so whenever the dog goes out, my roommate takes her out on a leash. That means this dog gets taken out 2 or 3 times a day, just to potty. No long walks. No fetch. No adequate exercise of any kind, especially for a dog this young and energetic. Just potty, sniff and go inside. She is fed once a day, only recently (within days) have I noticed feedings twice a day, maybe.
There have been multiple times when I have been asked to care for the dog while this roommate and friends go out of town for weekend or day trips. I have done my best to give her the care she deserves while I look after her: regular food times 2x/day, walks (and runs) up and down our coldesac, hanging out in the house while I’m home. I also work full time and have a cat, so it’s a challenge, but I do it.
This dog doesn’t seem to be a priority or a suitable choice for my roommate. I’m not one to micromanage or tell one what to do, but this seems like neglect to me. This dog deserves a better life with someone who can give her the exercise, attention, love and care she needs. Rehoming might be something to consider. (Even this roommate’s partner has brought up the crate time and their disapproval). I have no idea how to bring this up to my roommate, or if I should at all. She doesn’t take people telling her what to do with her dogs very well, from what I’ve heard.
Am I in the wrong here? Is this neglect? If so, any pointers on what I can do?
