Help with my screaming kitty

My cat is a 5 year old rescue and is, for the most part, a very easy-going and loving guy. The one problem that we have with him is incessant meowing for attention, especially if we're out of the house.

He likes to head straight to the hallway in front of our roommates' doors and start meowing at loud as he can. We've tried our best to solve the problem by ignoring him until he stops, but doing so isn't an option when he tries it late at night or early in the morning while everyone is trying to sleep.

Because we either have to go bring him into the room or spray him when he does this, he's just become emboldened and is getting worse and worse about it. Any time we're out of the house he will scream at my roommates for hours and paw at their doors nonstop.

It's getting to the point where it's causing problems with everyone in the house and one of our roommates is asking us to start putting him away in our room if we go out.

We really want to figure something out so everyone in the house can sleep easy without worrying about some loud yowling waking them up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
