He's not actually a new cat, we're pet-sitting for my sister for a few weeks, and it isn't going great so far. Our lady cat Daisy loves us, but is completely untrusting of my sister's boy River; she creeps around slowly if she has any hint he could be nearby, when she sees him she growls and hisses before running away and avoiding attention for a few minutes until she calms down. She has been avoiding certain sections of the house entirely because its where he hangs out, and its been going on for over a week.
For a bit of context, River is an older cat and a former stray. He has taken to indoor life so much that he is afraid of being taken outside. He is easily the most chill cat you've ever met, he basically never wants to play, he just likes to lay his chonky self around all day and get pet and cuddle. He has a history of getting along well with other cats before my other sister moved out with her cat Callie, who would often cuddle and groom each other.
Daisy is barely two years old, very energetic and loves playing, chasing paper wads and begging for attention. She was born into a small house and was perpetually kept in a dog crate with her siblings, mom, food and litter box until we adopted her. She has never seen another cat since then, though she has seen a medium sized dog and lots of new people. She was very timid when we got her and spent the first three days hiding under the couch before slowly acclimating to us and venturing through every room in the house regularly.
She usually takes about two days to get used to a new person before she'll approach them, but with River its been over a week and her behavior has not changed. We still have a few weeks before River goes home, but his being here is clearly upsetting Daisy, and I'm at a loss for what to do. She has seen me petting him, I've tried to call her over to him, she can smell him on me when I pet her, but she just can't accept that he wants to be her friend. Does anyone have advice?
